In the United States, 5.4 million people live with paralysis, and 1 in 7 US adults are impacted by disabilities that affect their mobility. Loss of mobility can have serious effects not just on one’s physical health but on their autonomy and mental health. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a rapidly developing form of therapy designed to help those with paralysis and limited mobility regain their ability to both independently exercise and move. There are many different forms of FES devices—some developed to act as exercise and physical therapy aids, and others that can help the user recover functionality such as walking or completing daily tasks.MYOLYN’s MyoCycle system falls under this umbrella of FES devices. Some forms of FES are still being investigated while others have multiple proven studies on their benefits. We’ll explore the various types of FES devices, what each is used for, and the benefits their users will experience from them.
