After an injury to the spinal cord or the brain, nerve signals from the brain to the muscles become blocked or disrupted, causing limited mobility and paralysis. In the past, it was thought that this disconnection was permanent with no chance of recovery, but thanks to modern research, we now know the brain and nervous system are a lot more adaptable than previously thought. 

Neuroplasticity is the concept that the nervous system can repair itself and form new connections to learn a new task or recover from an injury. There are ten principles to neuroplasticity as defined by two researchers, Jeffrey A. Kleim and Theresa A. Jones.
