How It Works

FES, or functional electrical stimulation, activates weak or paralyzed muscles using small electrical pulses applied via electrode pads placed on the skin. The stimulation activates motor neurons causing the target muscles to contract. By intelligently using FES to elicit sequential muscle contractions across several muscle groups, FES can be used to generate complex functional motions. This patterned firing of the motor neurons helps drive neuroplasticity, muscle reeducation, and relearning of voluntary motor functions.
